On April 23, AmCham China hosted the 2024 Government Affairs Conference, drawing nearly 100 government affairs professionals to explore the theme ““Embracing Change, Shaping Opportunities”
During the Conference, the 26th edition of the American Business in China White Paper was officially launched. This annual signature advocacy publication comprehensively assesses the operating environment for foreign companies in China and comprises 40 chapters written by hundreds of member company representatives, providing thoughtful analysis of the industries, cross-sector issues, and regions of importance to AmCham China’s membership. AmCham China President Michael Hart and Chair Sean Stein opened the Conference with welcome remarks.
Xiaolian Hu, Vice Chairman at China Center for International Economic Exchanges, delivered a keynote speech. In her remarks she outlined the highlights of China’s economic development and future direction. Notable points included the acceleration of economic activities in manufacturing and services sectors, the release of consumer potential, and the government’s commitment to innovation-driven, green, open, and shared development. Hu also highlighted measures to improve the business environment, calling for fair treatment of US businesses in China.
A fireside chat, moderated by Bing Zhou, Vice President, China Corporate Affairs at Intel China, delved into the concept of “New Quality Productive Forces” and its implications for multinational corporations (MNCs). The conversation featured insights from Jinyong Lu, Director of China Research Center for Foreign Direct Investment at the University of International Business and Economics. The pair explored opportunities and challenges faced by foreign enterprises in engaging with this new paradigm, emphasizing the importance of understanding policies, technological integration, and strategic adjustments.
Jin Fang, Vice Chairman and Secretary General at China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) delivered the second keynote speech on “China’s Development and Opportunities for MNCs.” His remarks provided a global and historical perspective on China’s development trajectory. Fang outlined China’s policy orientations in response to economic challenges and highlighted new opportunities for MNCs in China’s evolving landscape, emphasizing the importance of adaptation and identifying emerging opportunities in green innovation and internationalization of Chinese enterprises.
The panel discussion, comprising of a diverse group of experienced GA professionals, discussed the pivotal role of government affairs in business development. Panelists, including Qiang Lv, Divisional VP, Global GA at Abbott Laboratories Trading; Tim Stratford, Partner at Covington & Burling; William Zarit, Senior Counselor at The Cohen Group; and Weijia Wang, Vice President of Government Affairs at Dell Technologies, discussed the need for GA professionals to bridge the gap between government policies and business operations, mitigate instability challenges, and align strategies with prevailing agendas. Insights were shared on interpreting new policy terms and leveraging government relationships for business advantage.
The 2024 Government Affairs Conference provided a platform for GA professionals to gain insights into China’s evolving economic landscape, navigate policy changes, and forge partnerships for sustainable business growth.
