Ambassador Gary Locke Shares Views on US-China Relations

On November 20, AmCham China hosted an exclusive roundtable discussion for Chairman’s Circle members and Policy+ subscribers, featuring distinguished speakers former US Ambassador to China Gary Locke, Justin Huff, and Ray Liu. Moderated by former AmCham China Chair William Zarit, now Senior Counselor with The Cohen Group, this off-the-record event provided unique insights into the evolving US-China relationship and the implications for commerce and investment.

Gary Locke, former who is a former US Secretary of Commerce, Washington Governor, and Ambassador to China, drew from his extensive four-decade career in public service and diplomacy to offer a nuanced perspective on bilateral ties. Currently a Senior Advisor at Dorsey & Whitney, Locke shared reflections on his time as the first Chinese-American Governor of Washington and his groundbreaking role as the first Chinese-American US Ambassador to China, emphasizing the enduring importance of mutual understanding between the two nations.

Joining Locke were Justin Huff, former Deputy Director at the US Treasury who played a key role in chairing the CFIUS review process, and Ray Liu, Global Partner and Managing Partner at Dorsey & Whitney’s Beijing office. Their expertise in cross-border legal and regulatory frameworks added valuable context to the discussion, especially in addressing challenges and opportunities for businesses operating in the dynamic US-China landscape.
