AmCham China President Alan Beebe appeared on CGTN’s Global Business earlier this week to discuss, among other topics, the Biden-Xi virtual meeting.
Beebe said that President Biden’s remarks that the US is seeking a “straightforward competition” is very much aligned with the US business community. However, he observed that given the complexity of the current bilateral relationship, the Chamber thinks of this concept more as a “competitive coexistence”. Overall, he said that the meeting “laid the foundation for many things we’ve been very hopeful for” and called it the first step towards a cooperation and a demonstration of “competitive coexistence”
Also on the program, Beebe discussed the impacts of trade tariffs on US businesses. He cited the Chamber’s most recent flash survey on the issue and the desire of member companies to operate on a “level playing field”.
Beebe ended the segment by outlining the areas of positive cooperation between the US and China, including climate change and sustainability. He also reiterated the Chamber’s hope that this meeting will help form a stronger foundation for positive cooperation between the two countries.
