AmCham China President Michael Hart joined Emily Ni on Phoenix TV’s “Talk with World Leaders” this week. During the interview Hart discussed the impact of US-China relations on American business including trade relations, tariffs, and future cooperation. Click here to watch the full interview.
Hart on tariffs:
“The truth is that right now, it’s very challenging for President Biden to change course, if there’s not something he can point to in the relationship which has changed. And so for President Biden to drop the tariffs, he needs to be able to point to something to say things have improved, so I’m taking action”
Hart speaks on AmCham China’s continued advocacy efforts around China’s international travel policies:
“The best thing we can do to help Chinese economy is to get flights open to get people over here to see the market. It used to be that overseas investors would come to China and be really excited by how big the market and how dynamic the market is. We’ve said to everyone who will listen that travel is really crucial for a number of reasons, but one for people to come and see the market. Number two is travel is important to allow companies to come and approve new investment.”
Looking forward, Hart is optimistic about opportunities for cooperation in the US-China relationship:
“Over the past 20 years China has experienced a number of ups and downs, mostly ups; incomes have risen, companies have been built, people have been successful; people built careers. As China has become a world leader however, what people didn’t realize is that everybody has their eye on you. Now, what China does in the world doesn’t just impact China, it impacts a lot of other people. This is one of the things that US has said, we recognize that China has become a world leader. And we want China to help set some global standards. There are ways for example, for China and the US to cooperate on the environment. And, now there are ways for China and the US to cooperate on healthcare. There are a number of really positive ways we can cooperate, and this is because China, over the past 20 years has really become a major global player.”
