To foster the growth of the medical sector in Anhui Province and facilitate collaboration, AmCham China’s Healthcare Industry Group, in partnership with the Anhui Provincial Council for the Promotion of Trade, organized a visit to Anhui from March 27 to 29, 2024. The delegation comprised representatives from six leading global healthcare companies operating in China: Amgen, Becton, Dickinson and Company, Stryker, AbbVie, PerkinElmer, and Roche Diagnostics. The purpose of the visit was to conduct business inspections and engage in governmental and business exchanges aimed at bolstering cooperation.

Visit to Wuhu City
On the morning of March 28, AmCham China’s Vice President, Claire Ma led the delegation on a visit to two medical enterprises in Wuhu City: Ruijin Medical Instrument and Device Co. and Dajian Medical Science and Technology Co. They also toured the Wuhu Industrial Innovation Museum, gaining valuable insights into Wuhu’s geographical advantages, industrial characteristics, and the latest advancements in the pharmaceutical sector. Additionally, they participated in a roundtable discussion with local authorities.
During the visit, Wuhu City’s Deputy Mayor, Ding Baijing, provided an overview of the city’s medical industry’s current status and development strategy, highlighting its robust foundation in the pharmaceutical sector. With strong policy support and prioritized development, Wuhu has established a new model of diversified growth encompassing pharmaceuticals, traditional Chinese medicine, biologics, medical devices, and pharmaceutical distribution, aiming to become a regional medical hub for both countries.
Both parties agreed to enhance exchanges and cooperation for mutual benefit, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing the medical industry’s development in the region.

Hefei’s Biopharmaceutical Industry
Later during the afternoon of March 28, the delegation explored the biopharmaceutical industry in Hefei’s Xinzhan and Yaohai districts. The delegation embarked on visits to BOE Hospital, Shangrong Health Industry Park, and the Youth Creative Farm, engaging in discussions with officials from Hefei City, Yaohai District, and Xinzhan District. Alongside industry representatives, they delved into the current state, challenges, and future prospects of the biopharmaceutical sector. Discussions revolved around areas such as policy support, integration of the industrial chain, and talent development. A consensus was reached on the importance of strengthening cooperation to foster the healthy growth of the biopharmaceutical industry.
This visit and dialogue served to reinforce the bridge for cooperation between China and the US in the biopharmaceutical realm, potentially paving the way for deeper collaboration and advancements in industry development and innovation.

Policy Exchange with the Anhui Healthcare Security Administration and Health Commission
Leaders from the Anhui Provincial Health Commission and Healthcare Security Administration participated in a medical policy exchange roundtable organized by AmCham China and the Anhui Provincial Council for the Promotion of Trade. During the session, participants discussed various topics, including enhancing investment cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector by multinational companies in Anhui, promoting the exchange and sharing of medical technology, and optimizing health insurance policies to improve medical services.
Given the highly regulated nature of the medical industry, policy changes directly impact manufacturers, medical institutions, and patients alike. Thus, enhancing communication between foreign-invested medical enterprises and regulatory authorities is crucial. Through the roundtable discussions, the Anhui Healthcare Security Administration and Health Commission gained valuable insights into the policy challenges faced by enterprises, providing a basis for future policy optimization.
Corporate representatives also obtained a deeper understanding of policy implementation details and government initiatives, which can assist in better production planning. This exchange of perspectives and information fosters a collaborative environment beneficial for both the government and the private sector in advancing the medical industry.

Vice Governor Shan Xiangqian Meets AmCham China Chairman Sean Stein in Anhui
On the afternoon of March 29, Vice Governor of Anhui Province, Shan Xiangqian, met with AmCham China Chair, Sean Stein at the provincial government office. Shan warmly welcomed the AmCham China delegation’s visit to Anhui, recognizing Anhui’s distinct advantages in geography, science, innovation, and industry. He emphasized Anhui’s active development of ten emerging industries, including biopharmaceuticals, which has attracted global investors and represents a new frontier in reform and opening up. Shan expressed his hope that AmCham China would continue to act as a bridge, encouraging member enterprises to explore and invest in Anhui. He affirmed Anhui’s commitment to creating a market-oriented, lawful, and international business environment to better serve global enterprises.
Chairman Stein and the guests acknowledged Anhui’s favorable business conditions and expressed AmCham China’s and its members’ intention to increase their focus on Anhui. They pledged to enhance exchanges and cooperation in biopharmaceuticals and other sectors to better serve both Chinese and global markets.
