Campaign Statement
Dear Fellow AmCham China members,
My name is Joe Mazur and it is my honor to have my candidacy for the AmCham China Board of Governors considered.
I believe I would bring a unique and valuable perspective to the board. For the past four years, I have extensively analyzed and wrote on China’s policy and regulatory environment and its rising bilateral and multilateral engagement with the world in my role as a senior analyst at Trivium China.
Trivium’s central mission is to bridge the ever-widening gap between the US and China through objective and thoughtful analysis of economic and political trends. It’s a mission that my Chinese and foreign colleagues and I take very seriously and one which we believe has taken on an outsized importance in recent years. Through my work at Trivium, I have gained firsthand understanding of the hopes and anxieties of the foreign business community. I believe the combination of a broad-based experience in liaising with foreign multinationals, deep familiarity with key policy issues, and an extensive research background make me a strong candidate to push for real solutions to the problems facing foreign businesses in China. If elected, I would work hard to create positive impact on behalf of foreign companies and encourage meaningful dialogue between US and Chinese policymakers.
Apart from our day-to-day work of addressing the concerns of international businesses, Trivium is itself a small foreign company trying to navigate the complexities of China’s post-COVID business landscape. My role in a small, entrepreneurial US company gives me a window into the unique challenges and opportunities faced by American small and medium-sized companies that operate in China. As such, I would look to represent the perspective of other small and medium firms in BoG proceedings and advocate on their behalf.
Compared to other board members I am relatively early in my career. In an era when fewer and fewer young Americans are willing or able to come to China for education, as I did, I view this as a strength. I would seek to play a role in expanding educational exchanges and early-career training programs is crucial to building the next generation of people capable of working across cultures. Moreover, during my eight years in China, I’ve enjoyed a long-term affiliation with AmCham first as a government affairs intern during my first year in Beijing and later as an AmCham Young Leader Development Program fellow in 2019. I have an abiding respect for AmCham’s work and would be honored to have an opportunity to contribute to it.
Thank you for your kind consideration,
-Joe
